Mattis says U.S. to continue operations in South China Sea

By Idrees Ali ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Tuesday that the United States would continue to confront what Washington sees as China's militarization of islands in the South China Sea, despite drawing condemnation from Beijing for an operation in the region over the weekend. Reuters first reported that two U.S. Navy warships sailed near South China Sea islands claimed by China on Sunday, even as President Donald Trump seeks Chinese cooperation on North Korea. The operation, known as "freedom of navigation," was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, where Chinese, Japanese and some Southeast Asian navies operate. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2sqt0oG

New Jersey police investigated after punching woman in the head during arrest

Police officers have been reassigned to administrative duty amid an investigation into a video posted online showing an officer punching a woman on a beach in New Jersey. Wildwood police said on their Facebook page that 20-year-old Emily Weinman, of Philadelphia, faces several charges, including two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Video of Saturday's incident shows an officer striking the woman's head twice as she's down on the sand. Voices are heard yelling "stop resisting," though it's unclear who was talking. The video doesn't show what led to the confrontation. Wildwood Police Chief Robert Regalbuto said he finds the video "alarming" but doesn't want to "rush to any judgment" until the investigation is complete. Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the episode was a "shame," but said police would soon release body camera footage s...

Spiderman's French fairy tale sparks migrant pride and envy

At the French migrant workers' hostel where "Spiderman" Mamoudou Gassama was sleeping on a floor before becoming a folk hero for saving a child, his exploits have triggered a wave of pride tinged with envy. This week television crews swarmed the centre in the eastern Paris suburb of Montreuil to find out more about the 22-year-old Malian who was captured on video scaling an apartment block to bring a child hanging from a balcony to safety. Many residents were unaware the shy youth was living at the hostel and happy to see him hailed for his bravery by President Emmanuel Macron and being placed on a fast track to French citizenship. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2shrSVh

'Murdered' journalist Arkady Babchenko turns up alive after death staged to 'expose Russian plot'

By Wednesday afternoon, most of Arkady Babchenko's friends and colleagues had gone through the familiar cycle of grief and confusion that follows the killing of a Russian dissident journalist.  Obituaries had been written, travel arrangements were in train for the funeral, and Western politicians including Boris Johnson had announced they were "appalled".  Meanwhile, Ukraine had blamed Russia, Russia had blamed Ukraine, and both launched rival investigations to prove their stories.  And journalists in both countries, taught by bitter experience not to trust official probes into the deaths of their colleagues, pledged to run their own investigations. But then came a twist that no one could have predicted: Vasily Gritsak, the head of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), called a press conference and announced the whole thing had been a hoax.  Arkady Babchenko, centre, told a Press conference in Kiev the reported murder was part of sting operation to catch a hit squad...

Ambien can’t make you racist, but it sure can bring out your inner racism

After Roseanne Barr tweeted racist comments about former Obama staffer Valerie Jarrett, ABC cancelled her show , and her agent dropped her. Although she’s since deleted the tweet, the mistake cost her and countless others their livelihoods. Barr then tweeted an apology , and even said she’d be leaving Twitter . So far, she hasn’t. In fact, she’s been especially active on the site, issuing another statement at 11pm US Pacific time—local time for Barr—yesterday (May 29) blaming the sleep aid Ambien for her behavior. This tweet, too, was deleted, around 3:20am Pacific, Gizmodo reports . Ambien, manufactured by Paris-based Sanofi-Aventis, has been putting people to sleep for some 25 years, since it first received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in 1992. The drug, known generically as zolpidem, works by increasing the effectiveness (paywall) of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, which inhibits overactive cells. This works partially to quiet th...

New Zealand is about to use the nuclear option to beat a dairy-cow disease

It might have been a stowaway, crossing the border hidden inside a live cow from a distant land. Then again, the microscopic interloper—a miniature goblin—might just as easily have sneaked its way into New Zealand for the first time in a vial of frozen bovine semen. Either way, it’s a mystery. And frankly, it appears it’s one that’ll never be solved. But that’s not what Kiwi farmers really care about right now, anyway. They’re focused on the future of Mycoplasma bovis , that pernicious cell—the smallest living cell in nature—that’s been wreaking havoc on their dairy cows. It can cause pneumonia in calves, arthritis in older cows, and even induce late-term bovine abortions. As New Zealand’s agricultural industry has discovered, there is no magic elixir to stop the spread of Mycoplasma bovis . Not many antibiotics work on it. The problem is that most antibiotics, penicillin for example, attack and damage cell walls to destroy invader microorganisms, but Mycoplasma bovis has no cell w...

Jimmy Anderson defends England but Ben Stokes could miss second Test

• ‘I don’t think there is a problem. A bit of luck can turn it round’ • All-rounder a doubt for Headingley with hamstring injury Jimmy Anderson has offered a bullish defence of England’s Test side, insisting there is “no problem” despite a run of seven defeats in 10 matches, but that confidence was deflated somewhat late on Wednesday night with the news Ben Stokes is an injury doubt with a hamstring problem. The all-rounder has a tight left hamstring and will be assessed on Thursday before a decision is made on whether he needs a scan. Sam Curran has been drafted into the squad for Friday’s second Test as cover in what is the 19-year-old Surrey all-rounder’s first Test call-up. Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka expose surface tensions in Paris

• Court more slippery than usual, says 10-times winner Nadal • Johanna Konta and Alison Riske defeated in doubles The clay of Roland Garros is supposed to be mysterious, an ochre deathbed for the innocent and the ill-prepared. However, at least two players at this French Open have surprisingly divergent views on it. Naomi Osaka, one of the sport’s unusual thinkers, says it is not clay at all – “not clay-clay” anyway, as she put it after bundling Zarina Dyas out in the second round on Wednesday.
