England’s Sterling and Southgate call for action on racist abuse in Montenegro

• England manager says treatment of players ‘unacceptable’
• Sterling, Rose and Hudson-Odoi targeted by Podgorica fans

Gareth Southgate has denounced as “unacceptable” the racist abuse to which his players were subjected by sections of the home support during their resounding win in Montenegro, with the Football Association having submitted a formal complaint to Uefa.

When Representative Ilhan Omar recently complained about “the political influence in this country that says it is okay to push for allegiance to a foreign country,” many noted accurately that she had deployed a trope—dual loyalty—that had been used against Jews for years.
